Salena Estate: A Family Winery Built on the Riverland

Some of Australia’s best-known wine names come from grand estates with centuries of history behind them. Salena Estate tells a different kind of story — one that started less than thirty years ago, with a family who grew their own grapes, built their own winery, and named the whole thing after their daughter.

A Family Business, From the Ground Up

Salena Estate was founded in 1998 by Bob and Sylvia Franchitto, who set out with a clear goal: to become known as a maker of world-class wines that also represent genuine value in any market they reached. The company takes its name from their daughter, Salena, who grew up around the winery and now works as its Marketing Manager, traveling the world to represent the family business. Bob remains hands-on across the vineyard, winemaking and sales side of the operation to this day, while Sylvia — who met Bob at a community dance in the Riverland at sixteen — runs the finance side of the business. Their son Tyrone, an engineer in Adelaide, grew up feathering young vines around the family home and has said he plans to return to the business one day.

It’s a genuinely family-run operation, and that hands-on character carries through into how the winery actually works.

A Vertically Integrated Winery in the Riverland

Salena Estate is based in the Riverland, a wine region running along the Murray River in South Australia that the family itself describes as the country’s premier inland wine region — responsible for a major share of Australia’s wine exports, and for roughly a quarter of the country’s total wine production.

What makes Salena Estate distinctive within that region is how much of the process happens under one roof. The estate grows its own grapes across around 250 hectares, harvests them and moves them quickly to its own on-site, modern winery, then carries the wine all the way through fermentation, bottling and packaging before it ships out to markets around the world. The winery itself represents a multi-million-dollar investment in state-of-the-art equipment, alongside more traditional elements — a sizable collection of French and American oak hogsheads and barriques, where red wines are left to mature for months or even years. An in-house laboratory monitors every stage of production for quality and consistency.

An Organic, Minimal-Intervention Philosophy

Salena Estate has built a reputation as one of Australia’s largest producers of organic wine, guided by a “minimal intervention” approach: let the fruit and the land express themselves as naturally as possible, rather than correcting them heavily along the way. Alongside its own labels, the winery also offers contract bottling, private-label and bulk wine services, with a particular focus on organic production for other brands.

A Portfolio Built Around Variety

Rather than a single flagship wine, Salena Estate produces a range of distinct brands, each built around a different idea: ex-PRESS-ion, hand-selected wines meant to express the best of each variety, region and terroir; Twisted Sticks, an organic range blending tradition with new-world style; Nature’s Source, everyday whites and reds celebrating the region; #genS, a fun, approachable range for easy drinking; The Ink Series, alternative varieties drawn from Italy, Spain and France; and Salena, the estate’s own-label range offering exceptional quality at an accessible price — alongside further labels like BFR and Timekeeper.

Across more than two decades, that range has earned Salena Estate a substantial trophy cabinet — over 1,500 trophies, gold and silver medals collected from competitions around the world — while growing into one of the top 20 largest wine producers in the country, with an average annual production of around 15,000 tonnes exported in over 400 containers to more than 10 countries.

Still a Family Affair

For all its scale, Salena Estate still runs its cellar door seven days a week, welcoming visitors to taste what the Riverland has to offer in person — a small but telling detail for a winery that, despite growing into a genuine industry player, still describes itself, first and foremost, as a family.
